The best cities to spend New Year's Eve 2026 abroad are Sydney for the first big fireworks of the night, Edinburgh for a three-day Hogmanay, London for the Thames show, Reykjavik for bonfires and DIY fireworks, Dubai for the Burj Khalifa, Rio de Janeiro for the world's biggest beach party, and New York for the Times Square ball drop. All seven draw huge crowds. And huge crowds are where phones stop working just when you want them most. This guide covers the cities, then the practical part: how to find your friends, send your midnight messages and get home when the network is jammed.

  • New Year's Eve 2026 falls on Thursday 31 December 2026, so you're ringing in 2027 on a Thursday night with Friday 1 January as a holiday in most places.
  • Book early for ticketed events. London's riverside viewing areas and Edinburgh's Street Party both need tickets. Sydney, Rio, Reykjavik and Times Square are free to watch, but the best spots fill hours ahead.
  • Expect weak signal at midnight. Thousands of phones share the same masts, and mobile data use peaks right after the countdown.
  • Get local data sorted before you fly. A travel eSIM installed at home connects when you land, so you're not hunting for Wi-Fi on the busiest night of the year.

When does midnight hit in each city?

Sydney gets to 2027 while it's still lunchtime in London and breakfast in New York. If you're travelling with people back home in mind, this table tells you when to send the "Happy New Year" message, and when they'll be sending theirs.

Best cities for New Year's Eve 2026 abroad, compared

There isn't one best city. It depends on whether you want fireworks, a party, a tradition or a quiet night with a view. Here's how the seven compare.

1. Sydney, Australia: the first big countdown

Midnight = 13:00 GMTFree, with some ticketed sitesAbout 1 million people

Sydney is one of the first big cities to reach midnight, and it puts on its show twice. A 9pm family display comes first, then the midnight fireworks from the Harbour Bridge, the Opera House, city rooftops and barges on the water. The City of Sydney put the crowd for New Year's Eve 2025 at around one million people around the harbour.

Most foreshore spots are free, but they fill very early, and some close once they hit capacity. Last year a few free spots needed a ticket, including a ballot for the Cahill Expressway and tickets for the Opera House forecourt. Paid sites such as Taronga Zoo and Luna Park sell out. Many viewing areas are alcohol-free, so check before you pack a bottle.

2. Edinburgh, Scotland: Hogmanay over three days

Midnight = 00:00 GMTTickets for the Street Party29 Dec 2026 to 1 Jan 2027

Scotland takes New Year more seriously than anywhere else in the UK, and Edinburgh's Hogmanay spreads it over several days. The 2026 programme runs from 29 December 2026 to 1 January 2027. It opens with the Torchlight Procession on 29 December and the Night Afore Concert on 30 December. On 31 December you choose between the Street Party on Princes Street (around 45,000 people), the Concert in the Gardens below the castle, or a candlelit concert in St Giles' Cathedral. Free family events follow on New Year's Day.

The Street Party and concerts are ticketed, and you can't just walk into the arena on the night. Book through the official site at edwinterfest.com. Then wrap up: Edinburgh at midnight in December is cold, and it often rains.

3. London, England: fireworks on the Thames

Midnight = 00:00 GMTTickets requiredAbout 100,000 in viewing areas

London's show is set to the chimes of Big Ben, with fireworks launched from the river around the London Eye. The Mayor of London's official event runs from 8pm on 31 December 2026 to 12:30am on 1 January 2027. You need a ticket for the viewing areas along the river, and the City Hall events page says you can't get in without one.

Last year tickets were sold only through Ticketmaster and cost between £20 and £55 plus a booking fee, with the lower prices for London residents. The release date for 2026 tickets hadn't been announced when we wrote this, so sign up for alerts on the official London New Year's Eve page. Tickets go quickly.

4. Reykjavik, Iceland: bonfires and DIY fireworks

Midnight = 00:00 GMTFreeBonfires from 8:30pm

Reykjavik is the odd one out, and that's why people love it. There's no single official fireworks display. Instead, Icelanders buy their own fireworks and set them off all over the city at midnight, so the whole sky lights up at once. The hill around Hallgrímskirkja church is a popular place to watch.

Earlier in the evening, the city lights community bonfires. Last year Reykjavik listed ten bonfires, most lit at 8:30pm, with the larger ones at Geirsnef and Gufunes. The city checks the weather on the day and won't light them if the wind is above 10 metres per second. Fireworks aren't allowed at the bonfires. Between the bonfires and midnight, many locals go indoors to watch the annual Áramótaskaup comedy special on TV.

One thing to know: the city warns that air quality can be poor in the early hours of New Year's Day. People with breathing or heart conditions are advised to stay inside around midnight.

5. Dubai, UAE: the Burj Khalifa show

Midnight = 20:00 GMTFree in public areasMetro ran 43 hours last year

Dubai's main event is the fireworks and light show on the Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest building, watched from Downtown Dubai. There are also fireworks at other spots across the city, including JBR on the beach. Restaurants and hotels with a view sell dinner packages, and they sell out early.

Getting there is the hard part. Last New Year's Eve, roads around Downtown started closing in the afternoon, and Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) moved about 2.84 million passengers on public transport that night, according to Gulf News. The Metro ran for 43 hours straight. Arrive by Metro early and expect to walk.

6. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: Réveillon on Copacabana

Midnight = 03:00 GMTFree2.6 million on the beach

Rio's Réveillon on Copacabana is the biggest New Year's party on the planet. For the night that welcomed 2026, Rio's tourism authority counted around 2.6 million people on Copacabana and about 5.1 million across the city's 13 stages. Expect live music, fireworks over the sea and a drone show.

Locals wear white for peace and luck, and many jump seven waves at midnight, making a wish for each one. It's hot, it's loud and it goes on until sunrise.

7. New York, USA: the Times Square ball drop

Midnight = 05:00 GMTFreeAbout 1 million people

The ball drop is the most famous countdown in the world, and the hardest one to enjoy in person. The Times Square Alliance estimates about one million people come. The ball is raised at 6pm and drops in the final minute before midnight, but the organisers suggest arriving by mid-afternoon for a good spot.

Once you're in a viewing pen, you lose your place if you leave. There are no public bathrooms, and you can't bring large bags, chairs, blankets or alcohol. Plenty of people decide that's too much, and watch from a bar, a rooftop or the waterfront instead.

Why your phone struggles in a New Year's Eve crowd

A crowd watching pink New Year fireworks over a city skyline

A phone mast can only handle so many people at once. On a normal evening that's fine. At a fireworks show, tens of thousands of people stand in the same few streets, and at midnight they all try to send a video, post a story or video call home in the same minute.

The numbers show it. In the Netherlands, KPN recorded a new record of 595 terabytes of mobile data on New Year's Eve 2025, up 8% on the year before. VodafoneZiggo saw evening data use rise 12%, while phone calls fell 13%, NL Times reported. People don't ring each other at midnight any more. They upload. That's why a quick text often gets through when a video won't.

Operators often add temporary capacity at big events, but in the densest spots you should still expect slow data for half an hour or so after midnight. Plan around it and it won't spoil your night.

Home SIM, roaming or a travel eSIM on New Year's Eve?

Most modern phones can run two lines at once. The simplest set-up for a trip is to keep your home SIM switched on for calls and texts, so friends and family can still reach you on your usual number, and use a travel eSIM for data. Turn off data roaming on your home line so you don't get a bill in January.

Roaming on your home plan

  • No set-up needed
  • Daily charges can add up over a week-long trip
  • Some plans slow your data after a daily limit

Travel eSIM for data

  • Install at home, connects when you land
  • One fixed price for the whole trip
  • Keep your home number active for calls and texts

No SIM can beat physics. If a mast is overloaded, every network in that spot slows down. What a travel eSIM gives you is reliable local data for the rest of the trip: getting to the venue, finding your group in the afternoon, and booking a ride home afterwards.
